I don't want to pay commission.
Starting January 8, 2025, all travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Canada, and many others, will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their trip.
The ETA is a mandatory travel authorization for travelers heading to the UK who are visa-exempt, such as U.S. citizens. It’s a simple online application that grants permission to enter the UK. Think of it as an e-visa that’s quick, affordable, and designed for convenience. It costs £10 (about $13) and is valid for two years. The ETA allows you to make multiple trips to the UK during that period.
Who Needs an ETA?
If you are from a visa-exempt country (such as the U.S. or Canada), you’ll need an ETA for short-term visits (under six months). This includes travelers connecting through UK airports, even if you’re continuing to another destination.
When to Apply: Travelers must apply before boarding their flights to the UK. While approval isn’t always strictly required pre-flight, airlines may enforce this rule—so don’t take any chances. Applying for the ETA is fast and easy, with approvals often coming through in minutes. Here are some insider tips to ensure the process goes off without a hitch:
Use the Official Mobile App: For U.S. travelers applying via the mobile app, scanning your passport is a breeze.
Hack: Don’t scan the front cover of your passport! Instead, scan the inside of the back cover where the NFC chip is located. Hold your phone steady on the last page for a successful scan.
Apply Early: Although the ETA process is quick, give yourself peace of mind by applying as soon as you finalize your travel plans.
